There is a prayer room for use by the MIT-MSA community in the Institute’s Religious Activity Center (W11). The address for the building is:
40 Massachusetts Avenue
Cambridge, Mass. 02139
See Location Map
Note, though, that all mail intended for occupants of W11 should be sent to 77 Massachusetts Avenue, with the recipient’s name and building number (W11) noted.
Just inside the musallah are shoe racks and a rooms for performing ablution. In addition, there are bookcases on both the brothers’ and sisters’ sides of the room, which are denoted on the doors.
You are welcome to go inside the musallah whenever you please, although note that Religious Activity Center is closed in the middle of the night (including during fajr time). We are currently looking in to the possibility of obtaining 24-hour access to the facility for interested students. Aside from prayers, other events, such as Qur’an reading and halaqas, may also be held in the room.
Prayer times are posted just inside the musallah, as well as on the sidebar to the right. Further information about prayer times can be found through IslamicFinder. When on campus, the direction of prayer is parallel to the Charles River, facing downstream (see map).
Jumu’ah (Friday) prayers are held every Friday — during the academic year and the summer, during standard time and daylight-saving time — at 1:10pm. Please plan your schedules accordingly. The khutbah begins at 1:10, and the prayers usually begin at 1:45pm. The entire prayer should be finished by 2:00pm. During the winter months, attendees are invited to stay a few extra minutes to prayer ‘asr. Space becomes limited due to the large amount of brothers and sisters who attend from MIT and the local community, so it is highly advised that you arrive on-time. This is an excellent time to meet fellow MIT-MSA members. Also, there are charity collections after every jumu’ah prayer; please be generous.
During Ramadan, members of the MSA break their fast in the musallah just after the sun sets with milk, juice, and dates. Following maghrib prayers, dinner is served at one of several locations across campus.
